Prague, Easter weekend 2007

During the Nazi German occupation of Czechoslovakia, Prague itself was one of the few European cities not damaged by bombardment so all it’s ancient buildings are intact.  Old Town Prague celebrates the Easter weekend with a festival which include live intertainment, street food, pevo (or beer, of course) and painted eggs.  Around 68% of Prague is atheists and non-believers so it appears the entire festival is a marketing opportunity which we more than happily took part in.  We visited all the major attractions.

Carlyn and I in Old Town (Staré Město) with its Old Town Square

A view of Prague Castle, the Vltava River, and the Charles Bridge

Having our first Pivo at at Beer Hall/ Czech restaurant in Prague (I was a bit surprise at the size of the beer that was included wit my Pork Knees and Red Cabbage)

An Easter Tree at the Square of Old Town (click on pic to see detail)

Enjoying a coffee during a much needed break on the Vltava river

Enjoying a Staroceske, a typical Czech sweet in the stands of the Easter markets found in the Old Town Square. This sweet is bread with sugar cooked over a grill.

The Astronomical Clock composed of three main components: the astronomical dial, representing the position of the Sun and Moon in the sky and displaying various astronomical details; "The Walk of the Apostles", a clockwork hourly show of figures of the Apostles and other moving sculptures; and a calendar dial with medallions representing the months.

Georgia, Rhonda and I enjoying chlebicky (Czech open-faced sandwiches) which consisted of an egg spread, ham, either sliced or julienne, more egg and pickle on very soft French bread. Delicious!

The gothic Powder Tower was built in 1475 during the reign of King Vladislav II at the site of an 11th century gate, one of Prague's 13 original city gates.

Mozart composed "The Opera of Operas" - Don Giovanni - especially for Prague and he personally conducted its world first performance in 1787 at the Prague Estates Theatre (Stavovské Theatre). National Marionette Theatre presented this opera in the unique version using the classical marionettes. Tall marionettes as well as the stylish period costumes and original stage effects can be seen in the performance. It is presented in the original Italian librette
