The Birthweek celebrations began with a trip to Germany to, once again, visit our friends.  This time it was for the Rhine Wine Festivals in Rudesheim and Wiesbaden.

For the day of my 49th year we went to a local gastro pub, The Brown Dog,  which was named today one of nine Michelin selected venues in London for praise as "inspectors' favorites.  Another great meal followed by a homemade Pineapple upside down cake prepared by non other than Carlyn Klemm.  What else could a girl ask for?

Friday, after American product shopping at the Commissary in Wiesbaden we stopped in at Taco Bell for an “American Fast Food” fix.

Rhonda and Georgia had booked us a table for a birthday dinner at the 450 year old Guest house, Krone Assmannshausen http://www.hotel-krone.com/ where we were served “classic cuisine with regional and international specialties” and consumed an amazing bottle of Pinot Nior.

The grapes were grown and the wine produced from a winery behind the restaurant. Check out the Castle behind us, on the hill.

With a toast to my 49th year, with the Rhine cruise boats in the background.

Saturday our Hosts Georgia and Rhonda prepared a German and “American” (lovely potato salad) picnic high on a hill with the vineyards as our backdrop

The Mouse Tower (Mäuseturm) is a stone tower on a small island in the Rhine, outside Bingen. The Romans were the first to build a structure on this site. It later became part of Franconia, and it fell and had to be rebuilt many times. In 1298 the structure became an official customs collection tower. It was destroyed by a French army in 1689, then rebuilt in 1855 as a Prussian signal tower

Then….the wine festival in Rudesheim where we sampled a fair number of Riesling Troken from the area

We returned home to a joint birthday celebration from Rhonda and Georgia. Rhonda works with a woman who makes “American” type birthday cakes with the soft yellow cake and sugary icing. They topped it with Bryers Vanilla or Dove Chocolate ice cream. I’m telling you, we were living the American Dream in Germany.

Festivities underway in Rudesheim

Sunday followed with another wine festival in Wiesbaden then back home to celebrate the true Birthday in London.

Since I took her new hiking backpack on a hike the day after she got it and twice more after that, my new back pack became her new backpack!
